Continuing the tradition, MES at Nature’s Classroom

Memorial Elementary School sixth grade students kicked off the year by participating in Nature's Classroom.

For one unforgettable week, the usual hum of fluorescent lights and school bells was replaced by the rustle of pine needles and the crackle of campfires. The sixth-grade class traded traditional desks and whiteboards for muddy trails and open skies during their annual trip to Nature’s Classroom, turning hands-on outdoor experience into their primary teacher.

For many students, the trip marked their first extended overnight stay away from home. Bunking together in cozy dorm rooms decorated with pictures from home, mood lighting, basketball door hoops, and some stuffies for their bunks. These classmates became close friends as they learned the art of shared living, learning, and eating together. Mealtime in the dining hall was a cornerstone of the Nature's Classroom experience. Meals were served family-style, requiring tablemates to pass platters, ensure everyone received a share, and clean up together. Students learned through the ORT report about being better stewards of our environment.

As the buses pulled back into the school parking lot, carrying dusty duffel bags, worn-out sneakers, and spirited chatter, it was clear that the journey was amazing. The sixth graders returned with a newfound self-reliance, a stronger sense of community, and memories that will define their final year at Memorial Elementary.
