In June, retired U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Thomas J. Beder of Hopedale was recognized for his outstanding service to both the nation and the local community as part of the 2nd Annual Military Appreciation Day.

Beder was nominated for the honor by State Rep. Brian W. Murray (10th Worcester District).

Beder was not able to attend the ceremony at the State House but later received citations from the offices of State Rep. Brian Murray, Sen. Ryan Fattman and Gov. Maura Healey during a presentation before the Hopedale Select Board.

Beder has long been a dedicated community volunteer. He organizes Hopedale's annual Flag Day ceremony, Memorial Day Parade, and cemetery service; volunteers and speaks at the town's Veterans Day program; mentors local Boy Scout troops and Special Olympics participants; and leads the Greater Hopedale area's Toys for Tots campaign.
